I have finally gotten around to setting up and recording my key chain video as described in http://tdc.ds106.us/tdc603/. The main cause of delay is evident right in the video, I am more interested in tools than in using them to finish a project:
So I have two explanations of how this came together, the creative storytelling bit and the tools & technical bit.
From a storytelling perspective, this assignment was a natural for me. I really do spend significant time planning and perfecting what to carry with me on a daily basis and especially what to carry with me when I travel. I also like to travel so including that in my introduction video made sense.
From a technical perspective, I am managing this course as much as possible from an old laptop running Lubuntu. I recorded the video and the sound with the same Logitech webcam I use for Skype & Webex using Cheese. I created the title page using Gimp and then edited and formatted the video using Openshot. I have been using Gimp forever and Openshot for a while but this was the first time I used Cheese. It is pretty simple and worked fine. The one thing I will do differently next time is use a better mic, the one built into the webcam did not do well when pointing away from me like that.
